Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of Mark That Paper. By creating an account you agree to them.

The service

Mark That Paper provides rubric-based marking tools, including AI-generated first-pass suggestions. AI scores are drafts; you are the marker of record and are responsible for the final marks you assign.

Your account

You are responsible for activity under your account and for having the authority to upload the student work you process.

Materials you upload

As well as student work, you can attach supporting documents to an assessment — the assessment notification or task sheet, a stimulus or source booklet, a syllabus extract, an exemplar, your marking guidelines or a model answer. Mark reads them as background so his first pass is judged against the task you actually set. They never change the standard: your rubric remains the only thing scored against.

Some of these documents may be owned by someone else — an exam authority, a publisher or your school. By uploading a document you confirm that you hold the rights to it, or are permitted to use it, for the purpose of marking your own students' work. You remain responsible for that. Please don't upload material you are not allowed to copy.

Uploaded materials are private to your account. They are not shared with other teachers or schools, are not used to train any AI model, and are deleted along with the assessment they belong to. You can remove any document at any time from the assessment's Materials tab.

Subscription and billing

New accounts start with 25 free credits. After that you can subscribe to a monthly or annual plan (from $15/month) or buy one-time mark packs, which never expire. Billing is handled by Stripe. Monthly plans can be cancelled any time from the billing portal and access continues until the end of the paid period; annual plans are billed for the full 12 months. Prices are shown in US dollars, or Australian dollars for AU and NZ accounts.

If you run out of credits, AI marking pauses until you top up or your plan renews — manual marking and export always keep working. If a subscription payment fails, marking pauses until payment is updated.

Student accounts

Students may hold their own account to receive practice marking and feedback on their own draft work. Student accounts start with free marks and can buy one-time mark packs or take an optional monthly subscription (fair-use capped). If you are under 18, you must have a parent or guardian's permission to create an account and make purchases.

The student service gives feedback on work you wrote — it never writes, rewrites or paraphrases work for you. Practice marks are estimates, not a promise of the mark an examiner or teacher will award. You are responsible for following your school or institution's rules on AI use, including acknowledging your use of this tool where required. See Using Mark honestly.

Acceptable use

Use the service lawfully and only for assessment you are authorised to carry out — your own work if you are a student. Do not attempt to access other accounts' data or misuse the AI features.

Your content

You and your school retain ownership of rubrics, student work and marks. You grant us the limited rights needed to provide the service. See the Privacy Policy and the trust page.

Disclaimers and liability

AI suggestions can be wrong; review every mark. The service is provided "as is". To the extent permitted by law, our liability is limited to the fees paid in the prior three months.

Changes

We may update these terms and will note the date above when we do.
