Science reports and dissertations: how the rubric reads your method

A science report is not marked the way an essay is. Nobody is reading it for a beautiful argument. They are reading it against a rubric that asks, section by section: did you do the method properly, are the results presented so they can be trusted, and does the discussion actually interpret them? Once you see the report as a set of criteria rather than a story, the marking stops feeling mysterious.
The rubric reads your report in sections
Most science report and dissertation rubrics map onto the structure of the report itself. Each section carries its own criteria and its own marks, which means — as in most rubric-based marking — marks are lost per section, not overall. A flawless results section will not rescue a discussion that never engages with the data.
Broadly, markers are weighing three things across the core sections:
- Method:is it reproducible? Could another student repeat your procedure from your description alone, and are your choices — controls, sample sizes, variables — justified rather than just listed?
- Results:are the data presented clearly and honestly — the right figures and tables, correctly labelled, with uncertainty acknowledged — and reported without being interpreted yet?
- Discussion: do you interpret the results, connect them back to your aim and the literature, and deal fairly with limitations rather than hiding them?
Where the method quietly loses marks
The method is where confident students most often bleed marks without noticing. The rubric is not asking whether you followed a procedure. It is asking whether the procedure was sound and whether you have justified it. Why this sample size? Why this control? Why this measure and not another? A method that reads like a recipe scores in the middle band; a method that reasons scores at the top.
The same distinction runs through the discussion. Reporting that your result matched the hypothesis is description. Explaining whyit might have, what could have confounded it, and how it sits against published work — that is analysis, and analysis is what the higher bands name.
A science report is judged less on whether the experiment worked and more on whether your reasoning about it holds up.
Structure and communication carry marks too
Scientific writing has its own conventions, and rubrics reward them explicitly: a clear, focused abstract; sections that stay in their lane; precise, impersonal prose; figures that stand on their own. These feel like presentation, but they are marked criteria. A dissertation that buries its argument in a disorganised structure loses communication marks no matter how good the underlying science is. Practise against the rubric, not your gut
Pull up the actual rubric for your report or dissertation before you write, not after. Translate each criterion into a question you can ask of your own draft: "where, exactly, do I justify my method rather than just describe it?" If the answer is "nowhere specific", that is your redraft.
